If you weren't at last night's HRA board meeting, you really missed out.  We had outstanding presentations from Little Rock Recycling Coordinator Melinda Glasgow and Little Rock Police Officers Terry Hastings, Dwight Davis, and Grant Humphries.  Here are a few interesting tidbits from the meeting:

  1. Waste Management will now pick up your recycling at the same location it picks up your trash.  If your trash gets picked up in the alley, so too will your recycling.
  2. You can earn "points" by recycling.  When you accumulate enough points, you can use them to obtain discounts on various retail items and services.
  3. Points can be earned collectively and individually.  Collective points are based on the weight of our neighborhood's recycled items:  everyone who's signed up gets 2.5 points for each ton of material recycled in Hillcrest.  You can earn individual points by reporting each time you recycle, and by doing other "green" activities.
  4. You can't recycle plastic grocery bags through Waste Management, but many grocery stores participate in recycling programs that do accept bags.  For a list of items you CAN recycle, follow this link:

Crime in Hillcrest
  1. LRPD recovers stolen property all the time, but it can be difficult to reunite recovered items with their rightful owners.  There are several ways to make this easier.  Record the serial numbers from all your valuables.  Keep the list in a safe place.  You can also mark your items with an engraver or an ultraviolet pen, both of which are available at LRPD.  You can borrow an engraver; pens cost $13.  Engravers are also available at your local public library.
  2. If you would like suggestions on ways to make your home more secure, LRPD will send an officer to conduct a "security audit."
  3. Going on vacation?  Call 311 and LRPD will send an officer to check on your house while you're gone.  Make sure to let them know when you'll be back!
  4. Come to the door when people knock so it's obvious that you're home.
  5. Just say no to door-to-door solicitors.  Solicitors must have ID badges, and alarm solicitors must have photo ID badges issued by the Arkansas State Police.
  6. LRPD has hired 30 new police officers, all of whom will hopefully start by the end of the month.
  7. Get to know your neighbors, and call them when you see something in the neighborhood that doesn't look right.  Here's a handy chart for writing down your neighbors' contact info:
